Nenana Municipal Airport Project Update

We’re excited to announce that airfield lighting and signage construction will soon begin at the Nenana Municipal Airport. This initiative, made possible through grant funding from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), will improve visibility and enhance safety for pilots and passengers using our local airport.

Construction Notes:

•    All schedule dates are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.  

•    To be included on the distribution list for future construction updates, please email info@portofnenana.gov and put "ATTN: Weekly Email Update" in Subject line of your email.

•   Check current Nenana NOTAMs to get up-to-date information on closures. 

•    Use CTAF (122.1) to contact contractor staff on site.

•    Runway 5R/23L is closed due to ruts and soft conditions.

•    Note: Light fixtures are being installed but not connected to power. Lights will remain OTS until further notice.

Current Construction:

Week of September 13, 2026, to September 19, 2026 

 

Phase 5-1A-C – Cable pull and light fixture installation on Runway 5L/23R, 

Scheduled – Monday, September 14th to Saturday, September 19th

• Runway 5L/23R Closed - Tuesday, September 15 through Saturday, September 19

  • Runway will reopen with 15-minute notice to contractor staff using CTAF.

  • Runway is open between 1930 and 0700L each night

• Use caution and avoid construction areas enclosed with low level barricades.

Next Week's Construction:

​

Week of September 20th to September 26th

 

Phase 5-2A-C – Taxiway construction will occur. Specific closure dates for TWY A and TWY B have yet to be determined.  However, TWY A and TWY B will not be closed simultaneously, and apron access will remain available at all times.  Check NOTAMs for closures.

 

Brush removal is continuing.  This is not anticipated to affect Nenana traffic.

• Taxiway B Closed, Date TBD, 0700 to 1930L

• Taxiway A Closed, Date TBD, 0700 to 1930L

• Taxiway C will remain open, with personnel and equipment in the vicinity

• Use caution and avoid construction areas enclosed with low level barricades.

August through October 2026

Construction is planned from early August to late October 2026. Work will begin August 3, 2026. The project involves:​

• Replacing edge and threshold lighting and signage for Runway 4L/22R and Runway 4R/22L

• Replacing edge lighting and signage for Taxiways A, B, and C

• Replacing visual aids including segmented circle, primary wind cone, and airport beacon

• Replacing the supplemental wind cone and apron flood lighting

• Runway designation remarking

• Constructing an electrical equipment building

• Obstruction removal

Runway closures will occur between August 3 and September 24.
